American Councils, JFDP alumna, and Higher Education Institutes of Bosnia & Herzegovina Sponsor Summer Physics Workshop for High School Students

For the fifth year in a row, the Summer School of Physics took place in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina August 22-26, 2005. This year, JFDP alumna Zalkida Hadzibegovic, American Councils, the Physical Science Federation of Bosnia & Herzegovina, and the University of Sarajevo, Department of Physics, organized the training for twenty high school students. The primary goal of the workshop was to highlight the major environmental challenges facing Bosnia & Herzegovina, and to promote interest of the subject in youth who will soon enter the university.

Students participated in three distinct working groups, and work focused on the theoretical but also practical, with a visit to a thermal energy plant outside Sarajevo. Participants worked together with the sponsors to prepare materials which will be used in future events, and to disseminate to other interested parties.

All participants received certificates of completion, and the event was useful to all involved. As one university official noted, “I am very happy to see numerous talented students from around the country here in Sarajevo. You have to love your country, and give more effort to [the preservation] of your environment.” Students were hopeful that they could engage the Ministry of Education in future endeavors.
