P4L alumna Ivana Tošić's project: PLAY WITH ME

This is what Ivana Tošić wrote about the alumni event organized on the Global Youth Service Day:

Orphans. Abandoned and abused children. Just mentioning such words raises many thoughts and feelings, and none of them is either pretty, or pleasant. Whatever we do for them is hardly enough. They are short of basic things for a normal childhood, they are often deficient in material goods and commodities, but most of all they lack love and care. Devoting time to them, playing and teaching them, providing them with some items is the least we can do, and to them, it means a lot.

The idea was to spend as much time with them, performing various activities, teaching them through games and fun, and supplying them with certain requisites they need. Students that were willing to participate specialize in different fields and have different interests and hobbies. For example, Marko is a sports instructor and a coach, who has attended many winter and summer schools teaching and training children various activities. Children were encouraged to take part and learn, or just have fun; we also provided for the orphanage with sports requisite, such as balls, jump ropes, hoops, etc.

Another thing we organized is a workshop, providing them with the scrapping and crafting materials. The ideas were numerous, therefore we got in touch with the orphanage management and people responsible for them, in order to find out what they needed most and what could(not) work. In that regard, we bought pyjamas for kids, for each and one of them (purchased with a discount). We paid attention to the sizes they needed, even to number of female/male colours. Also, they desperately needed new table clothes (they had only 1 for 15 tables!). Furthermore, we purchased toothbrushes and toothpaste for all of them, some detergent, liquid soap, etc. Lastly, we brought some snacks and sweets in order to treat them in the end. It was, beyond any doubt, an unforgettable day for us all.

The main outcome we were looking for is a smile on their faces. That was our main goal and satisfaction. We hoped that spending time with them, playing with them and helping them to learn something was going to bring smile and joy not only during that day, but in the future as well. And, we like to think we have achieved that. The materials and requisites are to help them do so. My firm belief is that when it comes to orphans, no further explanation is needed.
